Previous versions of this particular appliction have been released with many different names, partially because of the constant changing of ownership of this application, and partially because of the ineptitude of the groups releasing the application. For this reason, I will explain how this goes for you:

This is the main BI suite/portal. It was originally called Seagate Crystal Enterprise (before version 9). For versions 9 and 10, it was called Crystal Enterprise (Seagate sold the app). After 10, Crystal was bought by a company called Business Objects, and BO decided that using decimal numbers for versions was a silly idea, so the next two versions of BO were called Business Objects Enterprise XI and XI R2. Then Business Objects was bought by SAP, who decided that BO was pretty ****** in moving from decimal's to roman numerals, but they felt that the product needed the XI in its name, so they decided to start it at v3.1, making this release as shown in the title.

SAP(GUI)’s Revolutionary Journey

SAP’s story is one of a steady rise from a small, five-man operation headquartered in southwest Germany’s Rhine-Neckar region to one of the world’s largest independent software providers and an employer of more than 47,598 people in over 50 countries.

Let me break those 37+ YEARS Into decades

1972 – 1981: The First 10 Years

SAP R/2 Developed by SAP and made a good hits on ERP Market!!!
SAP R/2: Architecture Contains:

a) Presentation Layer
b) Application + Database Layer

The limitation of 2 tiers is its speed of response if you compare the high volume of traffic as there is only one application server to answer all your queries there is no middle layer to handle that.

The R/2 user interface is based on terminal screens, which are often simulated by “terminal” programs on machines with a graphical user interface (UNIX, OS/2, Windows)

1982 – 1991: The SAP R/3 Era

So here is the Champ SAP R/3!!!!!!!

SAP R/3 .Version 1: Architecture

a) Presentation Layer
b) Application Layer
c) Database Layer

This architecture has got several advantages: It is faster as we have Buffering concept for the application server, load balancing to handle maximum calls, security etc…

Other Details are :

First “graphical” user interface for SAP software, typically in OSF/Motif look (OS/2 was strong then, too).
Tables are created using the Step loop technology (Don’t give me that Strange look Step loop is nothing but old method to create the tables now it is replaced by more flexible table controls.)
There are no graphical elements, such as group boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, table control, tab strip, icons (or even more advanced ones) available.
Duality of dynpro technology (screen with fields, tables etc.) and ABAP list technology (used for interactive reporting). Both technologies cannot coexist on one screen.

New Windows GUI (Windows 3.1; other supported platforms are OSF/Motif, OS/2 and Mac OS)
Windows look and feel (a little…)
No leading dots for field labels

1992 – 2001: The Age of E-Business

The GUI is “reinvented” (in cooperation with frog design) to allow for a new look and feel, as well as for branding.

A new application design with a multiple-area approach introduced as an attempt to get rid of initial screens and to reduce the need for screen changes.

2002 to Today: SAP Today:

I would like to discuss more on this part!!!!! Because this is the time when you see more colours on your sap screen J.

Initiative towards making the web-based GUI, wherein Webdynpro for abap/ java made it more beautiful and user friendly.

It enables application developers to create powerful Web applications with minimum effort using Drag and Drop for creating Layout and focusing more on the Business Logic. Integration with the Adobe forms and flex/Flash Island make it more User friendly. On other side BSP accelerated their UI and made it Reach Mobile applications using JQuery.

Now, I know what you must be thinking?

If SAP has such Beautiful Girls Upppssss!!!!!! Screens, why we still use those old GUI?

Let me clarify your doubt quoting Craig Cmehil – Director at SAP

“Why should SAP invest on changing the GUI of around 23,000+ screens of from old GUI where as business doesn’t have any need for such change ,Also it requires huge investment to redesign all these screens and training to existing SAP users for this new GUI.!!!!!!”

So in short Old SAP Development will remain the same But Don’t worry as SAP’s Future Development will be Colourful and beautiful.

In conclusion, as of now SAP doesn’t have any plans for redesigning the Old GUI into New, nevertheless all SAP’s future development will be colourful and beautiful.

IDES - the "Internet Demonstration and Evaluation System" in the R/3 System, represents a model company. It consists of an international group with subsidiaries in several countries. IDES contains application data f various business scenarios that can be run in the SAP System. The business processes in the IDES system are designed to reflect real-life business requirements, and have access to many realistic characteristics. IDES uses easy-to-follow business scenarios to show you the comprehensive functions of the R/3 System. The focal point of IDES, however, is not the functionality itself, but the business processes and their integration.

These IDES business processes are described in detail within this online documentation. The individual demos provide you with an overview of the master data, and contain step-by-step instructions of how to execute the individual processes. IDES not only covers the Logistics area, but also Financials, and Human Resources. It demonstrates how the R/3 System is able to suppt practically all types of industries, from discrete production through to process industries, from engineering-to-der to repetitive manufacturing. However, IDES is not a sect-iented model company. The individual processes are based on practice-iented data f sects such as Retailing Banking. The IDES group manufactures products as diverse as elevats, motcycles, and paints.

IDES is managed by SAP just as any regular business enterprise. SAP regularly updates the IDES data (master data, transaction data, and customizing). We also carry out period-end closing and plan with different time-hizons. Transaction data are generated to ensure that the infmation systems in all areas have access to realistic evaluation data. We are constantly implementing new, interesting business scenarios to highlight the very latest functions available in the R/3 System. New functions are represented and documented by IDES scenarios.

Above all, IDES shows you the possibilities of the integrated applications in the SAP System. We cover all aspects of a business enterprise, including Human Resources, Financial Accounting, Product Cost Planning, Overhead Management, Profitability Analysis, Planning, Sales and Distribution, Materials Management, Production, and much, much me. We have also integrated document administration and third-party CAD systems within the IDES system. This means that you can call up and display external documents, access CAD drawings.
